I am looking to get into racing, and I have chosen spec miata to start out in due to the low entry costs. I think I would be more interested in racing an open-wheel formula car, but had originally thought that the price was too high to get started. Am I incorrect in this assumption? Are there open-wheel series' that are as inexpensive to be competitive in as Spec Miata? Are there as many events involving open-wheel cars as Spec Miata?

FV presents a very good solution for Open Wheel racing at an attractive price.  The class has always been a restricted rules class and the cars that race today are as equal as any spec class that races incluing Spec Miata.  Almost all of the engines are supplied by a handful of engine builders and are all very close in horsepower with great reliability.  There are cars available (if you know where to look) and the guys that race in this class are very willing to share information with you.  There are additional benefits as well such as reduced trailer costs, simple mechanical components with good parts availability from a multiple suppliers.  If you would like to discuss this more fully, please contact me.  I can even give you a video link that will showcase what it is like.

A formula car is real easy to work on - access is excellent.  If you wreck the Miata, you'll be looking for another chassis.

Good regional level Formula Continentals (mid 90's Van Diemen) can be had for about $12K or so.  Formula Ford is a good place to start in these cars though...
