I don't about the quantity but having had my butt handed to me a few weeks ago I can vouch for the quality!

I don't think I've seen a bigger group of novices in my short time running with NER (2008).  38 is a great turnout for that class, and is a testament to the great environment that NER provides for novices.

In 2004 it was not uncommon to see 60+ novices at an event.

Event # 5, July 3rd, 2004 had 38 Novice Stock entries (won that day by none other than Wiley Cox) and 33 Novice Non-Stock

Yes, novice used to be so big it warranted two separate classes.

By the way, it's fun to check out some of the names in the novice ranks.  Scroll through the Novices from this event:

We had 39 at the event after the school, as well as several first year autocrossers in open class.

Also, there are some people that should think about moving to open class for this Sunday's event...

Kinda makes me nostalgic, I sorta miss being beaten by Eddie ( 6 seconds ) running my twin-cam Neon against his single...

Ah the good old days...

:-)   Ahhhh, memories....I want to say we hit 80+ Novi at one event in the early 2000's....but 190-210 entry list was seen maybe once a season (other than a Tour)...unless my age embellishes the numbers, for one or two of the popular mid-summer events.

I seem to remember 80 as a number as well, but have not been able to find the date.  If memory serves, it was the event where we had upwards of 60-70 people, between open and Novice) in what was then STS, (now ST).

I'm pretty sure this was my first event as Solo chairman, which would have been 2002, I think. It was also the last time I ever pre-announced a run order as that event was a disaster from an operational perspective and there was no consistency in event attendance at that point since we had many, many more novices and casual participants than the program does now.

I did some digging:
Event 1, 2002: 63 novices (one class then), 170 entrants, 3 runs
Event 1, 2003: 24 novice stock, 25 non-stock, 177 entrants, 3 runs
Event 4, 2003: 30 novice stock, 24 non-stock, 193 entrants, 3 runs
Event 4, 2004: 39 novice stock, 23 non-stock, 181 entrants, 4 runs
Event 5, 2004: 38 novice stock, 33 non-stock, 185 entrants, 4 runs
Event 1, 2005: 27 novice stock, 37 non-stock, 194 entrants, 3 runs (this was the biggest event I could find in my records which go back to 2003)

I also can't figure out which event had the huge ST* open and novice combo which threw the entire event into a tailspin, but it appears to have been event 1 in 2003, based on Bob Lang's writeup here: http://www.ner.org/sites/ner.org/files/solo2003_event1_writeup.pdf.

Over the last three years, we've had a couple of 40-ish novice entrants events. We try to average out the totals of novice participation each year when we do the annual report for the BOD. Getting an average participation number is a bit tough because we have events (like the team challenge) where novice class is not recognized, but over the last three or fours year it's been pretty consistent AVERAGE of 25. So from those data points, the novice turnout was not that unusual, especially considering the total number of entrants (in the 135-ish range).
