Hey, hopefully you guys can steer me in the right direction.  I am looking to get involved with club racing and am in need of some advice on where you would start if you were starting out on a limited budget.  At a glance it seems like buying an old Miata and bringing it up to spec is the most cost effective option, plus the classes seem to have quite a bit of competition.  This may be completely inaccurate but i don't know.  How much money in parts need to be bought on top of the base care to make it a racer.  Would a bmw 325 maybe be smarter for certain classes?  I just have no idea.  So my question in short is this.  If you were starting out, with a shoestring budget and wanted to get into the sport, and a competitive class... What car would you look for, year/model etc, how much can I expect to spend modifying said car myself, what series would you shoot to compete in, etc etc etc.  Any further information you all can provide would be great!!

Thanks, hope to see you all on the track soon

Just starting out in club racing, I would recommend renting.  You would get a lot of support and knowledge by renting from a place like FlatOut Motorsports.  Lots of wins in clubracing.  If you have a truely limited budget, look at Solo events, not wheel to wheel, but you will gain a lot of car control skills which will transfer to Club Racing.  Many of the best Club Racers have started out doing Solo events.
