NER Solo Novices and sudo Novices: Welcome to the 2012 Season!
My name is Jeff Anderson, the 2012 NER Solo Novice Chair. I'll be your go to guy at the event to point you in the right direction. As you have seen on these forums, we have an abundance of members willing and eager to help you so don't feel that I am the only one. I've always got on University of Florida Gators stuff and generally wearing something, or multiple things in orange. The car I am driving for the year is a Blue RX8 number 78 or 178 STX.

Here is a link to our season schedule: http://www.ner.org/solo/events

Our season starts in 4 short days at the wonderful Fort Deven's facility in Ayer MA. It looks like perfect early spring weather with lots of sun and warm'ish weather. I just wanted to let you know a few important things as you prepare to attend.

REGISTRATION: If you want to attend please visit this link to register for the event. We do not allow day of registration: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/BB688E92-B478-4885-14052956818825F7

For those of you attending your first event please know that you are coming to a club with a great novice program and a group of people that will help you through every step of the day. The big things for you to know about the first event are:

What you should do before the event:

ARRIVE EARLY - Gates open at 7am. The closer you arrive to that time, the more prepared you'll be when the event starts.

Take a read through this page:
http://www.ner.org/solo/getting-started

TECH INSPECTION: Every car must pass a tech inspection before running. If you fail and can't fix the problem you won't run:
http://www.ner.org/solo/tech-inspection
---- We have loaner helmets, but they are not to use for the entire day. You will grab one as you are approaching the start and return it as soon as you are done running each individual run, not heat.

Clean out your car: No trash or loose items. Do this at home so you are not scrambling the morning of
Check tire pressures: Either bring a pump or stop at the gas station in town and make sure you tires are properly inflated. Inflating above base car specs is ok and may help, but don't go crazy. I wouldn't recommend anything more than 5psi over the stated car specs. Ask one of us for advice at the event if you are un-sure.
Bring tape to mark your car class and number. Contrasting color to your car paint is key. Don't use blue tape on a blue car. Painters tape is best as it will not leave residue on your car.

----------
What to bring:

FOOD AND WATER: There is no food or water on site or provided. We have some water at the workers stations and timing truck, but you should bring whatever you will need for food and drink for the whole day with you. There may be time to run into town and grab something, but it takes 20-30 minutes to do so.

SUNSCREEN: It will be sunny and there is no shade. Don't become a lobster!

CHAIRS: You may want a chair to set up by your car. You can't take it on course, but while your relaxing (if there is time) they are nice to have

TOOLS: If you think you'll need to do anything to your car, a jack (jack stands as well) and tools may be useful. If you don't have them and something comes up, most of the regulars have them and you should be able to borrow some stuff.
---------

When you arrive:

Look for a brown tent and funky metal sign that says NOVICES. There you will find me and possibly a few other folks that car help and answer questions. I'll be wearing an Orange University of Florida hat. There will probably be a Blue RX8 parked in the area. We are there to help you throughout the day.

If you have any questions feel free to email me @
NERSoloNovice@gmail.com

Cheers and I hope to see you are there many times this season

Thanks Jeff, really looking forward to it.  Quick question:  We're registered for the event (first-timers.)  Are run groups and work assignments posted ahead of time or only announced the morning of the event?

See you there!

Tsoja

Glad you are heading out! We try to post them the night before. I can't promise this will happen for the first event.

See you out there

Question for you: During the time we have to learn the course, can I bring a longboard (like a long skateboard, but not used for tricks; used for travel) to see the course a little faster than walking? It would nicely fit in my trunk, unlike a bicycle.

No for competitive advantage reasons everyone has to walk (and see the course at walking speed).

I have gotten permission to use an adult 2 wheel very controllable skooter in the paddock only - not on course, not in grid.  This's for everyone's safety.   I can't answer if you can use a longboard in the paddock but  the purpose you asked about would be off limits for it.

We will help you out quite a bit! Join us on the Novice Walk through for some fun insight into the sport of AutoX. Just make sure it is Sans "Longboard". The idea of the course "walk" is that you have to visualize yourself at speed, not actually at speed!

Looking forward to meeting you. Come find me at the Novice Station. I'm excited to show off the new sign!

Cheers

Ha! an ace of bass reference. you guys are funny! My name's Chris, I'm planning on doing some autox this summer, I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Gators hat.  I really like how you're an ambassodor to the inexperienced and uninformed.

I have a question regarding classes, I have a 1992 VW golf gti that is gutted, has a cam and exhaust mods (soon a header and no cat) and some suspension (lowering springs).  I don't have any safety stuff put in yet (is that required?) and I don't really know what class I fall into.  I race the car in the Modified front wheel drive class for Rallycross (with different suspension and tires).  Any guidance you can give me would be awesome.  Also, I wanted to know how badly I would get my butt kicked.  Who and what would I be driving against?

Thanks!!

Well, the word "gutted" makes me think you would most likely wind up in E Prepared (EP), as prepared classes allow much more substantial interial removal than any of the street classes.  I'm personally not an expert on the prepared rules, but nothing else I've mentioned seems that it would force you into the modified class.

Looking at the last event, there were 3 EP drivers competing...  all in VW's!
