As I prepare to finally get my 2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport onto the track I have checked and recheck classes and still have a question. At first as I looked through the classes I thought G stock. So I looked through the past results just to see how the non turbo Imprezas did in G stock and the only one I saw was in H stock (novice).
Here is what I have.
2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5 liter N/A engine Auto transmission Completely stock with the addition of a rear sway bar
I know, slow, heavy and so so suspension. But it is all about the fun and bettering ones self, right?? So what do you think, G or H?

Your initial impression is correct; GS is the proper class for the car.

Yeah, I suspect that car was just not classed clearly. "Impreza 2.5" strikes me as a model designation referring to the 2.5RS and, by extension perhaps, the 2.5TS wagon variant. Those were sportier than other Imprezas when those classes were decided. No other cars have engine displacements outside of parentheses, and no other listings have displacement without a unit (L, cc,etc). Your Impreza should be in HS I'd say. -N

As a general rule, the SEB has classified car models with the same engine together, irregardless of suspension tuning between different trims.
For instance, the Neons come with either the ACR suspension or the standard suspension. Either way you are classes in GS.
So, despite the fact that the particular trim might be an HS car, the car is class in GS.

As a general rule, the SEB has classified car models with the same engine together, irregardless of suspension tuning between different trims. The problem with that theory is that they did differentiate between models of Imprezas. They are distinguished as Impreza WRX, Impreza STi, Impreza NOC, Impreza GT, etc. They are not distinguished by engine displacement, which would be in parentheses with units. If the 2.5 is to be taken as an engine displacement, then it's the _only_ displacement distinction made that way. When they classed the Imprezas in stock, they did it when there were 2.5RS Imprezas in GS and NOC in HS, then they added more models as the turbo variants came to be. Those NA Impreza class listings were never adjusted/clarifiied when they just made them all have the 2.5L motor, even though that was 10 years ago now. To the original poster, it won't matter which way you go, from the sound of things. Your mods are far more inline with the "Just come and have fun" mentality. While I would call the car an HS listing under the Impreza (NOC) listing, running in GS almost guarantees no one objects to your running in the wrong class. Since I'm not in GS or HS, I don't really have a stake in the matter. It's a shame that a car as common as the Impreza isn't classed more clearly. Someone can send a letter to the SEB asking for clarification in the next rule book I guess. Perhaps if I'm so motivated, I'll do just that. -N

This has been clarified in Fastrack July 2007. Unfortunately the old link I have to the pdf is dead, but if there is any way to retrieve the archives that I am not privy to; you will see that the wording was changed from GS "Impreza 2.5RS" and HS "All Impreza models other than RS/WRX/STi" to read GS "Impreza 2.5 (normally aspirated)" and HS "Impreza (NOC)." The GS listing was abbreviated for the rulebook in 2008 to read "Impreza 2.5 (N/A)" and then again last year to read "Impreza 2.5 (non-turbo)" while the HS listing has been left unchanged.
Edit: Found it; Page 24, Tech Bulletin #8. http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/Documents/Fastrack/07-fastrack-july-full-revised.pdf

Interesting. It's a shame they didn't actually fix the listing when they clarified it. That should probably just get sent in as a typo now to the SEB, to correct the listing to "Impreza (2.5L non-turbo)" so that it looks like all the other cars. Given that Fastrack though, I'd agree with PZ and say they clearly intend for 2.5L Imprezas to be in GS. -N

I agree, it seems that somewhere between the Fastrack release and the rulebook revision that the 'L' litre designation was dropped from the wording leaving a bit of ambiguity.

Thanks for all the imput. I don't feel so foolish asking for the classing. But after reading the answers it dawned on me to check the SSCA website. The 2012 SCCA Solo Stock Category Classifications By Manufacturer is very clear. http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/2012%20SCCA%20Solo%20Stock%20Category%20Classifications%20By%20Manufacturer%20-%20May.pdfSubaru Impreza 2.5L, non-turbo 1998-2011 G Stock - GS Subaru Impreza non-RS 1993-2001 H Stock - HS Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2012 H Stock - HS Subaru Impreza WRX non-STI 2002-12 D Stock - DS Subaru Impreza WRX STI including Special Edition 2004-12 B Stock - BS So the 2011 Impreza I saw in HS was classing incorrectly. Apparently Google isn't always the best place for answers. It was right where it should be if I looked. I guess I should still feel foolish....
