You would think you would learn.  FTD at Stafford National two years in a row in a FWD Civic with studded Hakka 5s.  I am not that good a driver.  It is all about the tires.

If there's ice under the snow, blizzaks are useless.  Completely.  You're better off with studded for the frozen tundras of the Northeast.

I would say it depends on the car.

Warren and I are pretty much finished running studs. He may comment on this more

The last 2 years all that the studs did was give a couple of  "god like" runs for us and then they started to fly out of the tires. We bought the best "these wont come out" kind of tires and drove them on the street as recommended, the things just blow out with the transition from ice to snow to gravel/dirt, and a heavy right foot they just don't hold up on our car and with us driving it.

A lighter car (chang) driven by an old lady (chang) with no torque (honda)  Grin maybe could hold up with the studs, but I think next year we will just run some rubber to ice tires instead of the studded tires. Ice racing you could get the studs to stay in, but the mixed surfaces we have are very hard on the tires.

A rubber to ice tire designed without studs is better than a studded tire that has lost all of it's studs. The studded tires have bigger blocks (to hold the studs) with fewer sipes in them, and are not so good on the ice when they lose studs. Also if you do any ice racing a tire with 5 studs left in it is going to run in the studded class regardless, and those guys have all the studs in there still.

If you are picking a tire just for winter races a set of blizaaks/hakka 5's/hakka r's maybe graspics would be great. If you are picking a tire for the whole season the winterforce can't be beat. They are good in the snow, ok on the ice, great in the dirt, great in the mud.The real soft tires just don't hold up on the dirt they get shredded pretty fast.

Note there was no mention of all seasons anywhere in this post. If you go to Nashville or Virginia and the course is bone dry hard pack maybe you could run all seasons, maybe azenis would work. Don't try it in NER

Justin is right, Winter forces are a whole season tire. Me and Brad got Schooled at Stafford on the ice. Winter Forces rock in the mud and dirt. I'm not even looking forward to NED if there is ice under all that snow. The winter forces can deal with a good amount of snow, but where never designed for ice.

You could run studded winterforces and enjoy them until the studs fly out. I'm thinking of a car that did this. Now, which one was it? I think it was silver, had a red light in the front, maybe a pac man sticker, two drivers with egos so big they had to cut the sunroof out.  Wink
Damn, can anyone help me out here? I think it won first and second in every event at Stafford.

The winterforces I had at Stafford were inadequate compared to the studs. But, they are great tires when there's no ice. Definitely recommend as a year-round tire.

We own a couple sets of once-upon-a-time studded snows. Studded or not, new winter tires all wear out
quickly. Cheaper alternative is used. Check out Craigslist or Uncle Henrys for used mounted tires and start
hoarding wheels.

Ftd on saturday was a 79.851 on Hakka R's. Ftd on sunday was 93.367 on Hakka 5's with very few studs. Sunroof was remove to accomadated large heads. Codriver gave instruction to go easy on studs but right foot only has one postion. See yall in a week or so. Lord of the Rings

I agree that any snow tire will be better than an all season or summer tire. But in the past i have had blizzaks and they were great snow tire's, I've never run hakkas but i've heard they are good too, I'm going to look for a set of 16 inch snows at the junk yard this weekend, i just put 16in Subaru forester steelies on my 89 Camry and they look cool, but the potenzas not so cool. so yea go find some snow tires.

hehe, Justin got beat by an old lady with no torque.
Bridgestone of Europe contracts Nokian to make the snow tires for them in Europe because they cannot compete because of all the patents Nokian has on snow/ice/studding tire technology.

Yeah the audi's big butt was hard to tame on the ice, I think I ended up traveling an extra quarter mile to finish the course

I just know the plan for the Mirage drivers is to hammer down, hold on and gain back some points.

Hi everyone...Lurker who finally signed up and actually thinking of participating at NED this weekend...

I have a few questions...I have never done this before so sorry for the silly questions

I have a new wrx..probably not the smartest thing to do but my wife and I wanted to get one to have some fun so we're going to have some fun....

1. Helmets...Any local shops in the seacoast area we can pick some up?
2. Numbering on the car..what's the best temporary method ..On the window with tape?

My wife and I usually volunteer at the big stage rallies but we wanted to do some driving ourselves..This is right down the street so how could we say no?

Thanks in advance!

Some answers:

1. Helmets are available during the event.
2. You will be issued a magnetic number during registration.

Have fun!
