Would anyone give me any advice on which brand of OBD 2 equipment is the most useful to buy for someone looking to perform maintenance on an array of makes of vehicles? I work with a guy who asked me for some advice, but I have none to give, so I told him I'd ask here. He's considering lap top based hardware for diagnostics mostly on Toyotas.  Anything would help.

I would recommend a mega squirt 2 ecu setup. they are cheap and you can tune them with a laptop, this is the way to go with most Toyota's, I'm going to put one in my 89 Camry when i get done with the 3sgte swap. very cool stuff here's the link..... diyautotune.com/ ..... you can build the ecu  yourself or buy one yourself, either way these are really simple and effective setups. good luck.
