Stirling Moss Runoff
The Stirling Moss Nurburgring Trophy has been awarded to the New England Regions' top Solo driver each year since 1968. It is Moss' hand hammered sterling silver trophy from the 1956 German Grand Prix. It was acquired in the late 60's, when then Solo Chairman John Berg was looking for a trophy to be given to the New England Regions' top Solo driver. He happened to be married to the daughter of the V.P. of SAAB.
At the time, SAAB sponsored a Pro Rally team consisting of driver Eric Carlsson, and navigator Pat Moss (Stirling's sister). Through these channels, Stirling came to donate the trophy to the NER. The trophy is one of few Moss trophies that still exist. It has been reported that Stirling melted his others down to create a 300 pound coffee table. As part of his donation, Stirling Moss requested that the trophy be engraved with "It's hard to drive at your limit, but it's harder to know where it is." The winner is always deserving of the title "NER Solo Driver of the Year."
In the competition, all the participants make three runs to determine their best time on a course. The runs are then rank ordered by PAX/RTP (factor) and the drivers are awarded points with the best PAX score getting the most points. This is half the total. The drivers then make three more runs attempting to duplicate the best run from the first round. Those runs are then measured to determine the standard deviation from the best run of the first round. The standard deviations are then rank ordered from smallest standard deviation to largest and points are awarded with the most points going to the smallest standard deviation and the least points to the largest standard deviation. The combined score of the best PAX/RTP and the standard deviation determines the region's best driver for the year.
In essence, you have to be fast and consistent.
